Day 1 - Learning the Basics!

Today was the beginning of the Architectural Models J-term! We started off the morning by reviewing our itinerary and mapping out our activities for the day. Our first activity was researching on architectural styles that interested us and sharing back to the group! Students had the decision to work alone or in pairs and had complete creative freedom in which style they researched and what information they chose to present. Some styles we learned about from our peers included Islamic architecture, eco-brutalism, Bauhaus architecture, and baroque architecture. We did half of the presentations before lunch and half of the presentations after lunch. After this activity was over, we spent 10 minutes deciding who was going to write blogs, take photos, and present their building-of-the-day for the rest of the term.

Finally, it was time to make use of the inspiration we got while watching our classmates present. We watched a short YouTube video about tips and tricks for architectural sketching and then left the remaining hour and a half of the day for sketching. Whether it's sketching an already existing image or designing a new building, students got to pick any of the architectural styles they learned about in the morning and explore their ideas, keeping the tips they learned from the YouTube video in mind.

Overall, today was a great introduction to the term. We got to see how diverse the world of architecture is and how much room there is for creativity, and then expanded on what we learned and observed by getting our ideas down on paper!
